Serious collision at Brooks convoy sends two people to hospital

UPDATE- — In an email, the Brooks RCMP say all people involved in the crash were males, and RCMP regret the error made in their previous media release.

BROOKS,AB- RCMP in Brooks say two people had to be taken to hospital following a serious collision on Highway 1, west of Brooks Saturday afternoon.

Police say one farm tractor was moving slowly in a small convoy with another truck when a second pick-up truck struck the other truck in the rear bumper. The truck participating in the convoy was pushed off the road. The second pickup truck continued to drive forward and then struck the back left tire of the tractor, according to RCMP.

RCMP say the 45-year-old male driver of the pickup truck had to be extracted from the vehicle and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 27-year-old male passenger of the first truck in the convoy also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. The driver of the vehicle did not sustain any injuries.

The 38-year-old male driver of the tractor suffered minor injuries, RCMP said.

The crash remains under investigation.

In a statement, the RCMP said the convoy is illustrative of how large “slow-moving convoys can greatly reduce the safety of our provincial highways.”

“The Alberta RCMP are aware of the multiple convoys and protests taking place around Alberta and are monitoring and deploying resources as needed to ensure public safety. While everyone has the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, we remind individuals to do so within the confines of the law. As a result of convoys, traffic in several areas of the province is extremely slow. We ask that everyone be lawful, respectful and patient when encountering slow-moving traffic.”

The RCMP added that traveling at the posted speed is meant to maintain the free flow of traffic, and will reduce the chance of other motorists growing impatient.
