Group of truckers, supporters doing ‘laps’ on Trans-Canada Highway near Brooks

BROOKS, AB – A slow-moving convoy took to the Trans-Canada Highway at Highway 36 Wednesday afternoon, the latest action by truckers supporting the convoy to Ottawa protesting health measures and pandemic mandates.

The convoy involved at least dozens of vehicles, appeared to be about two kilometres long, and was travelling at about 25 km per hour.

Semi trailers and other vehicles were adorned with signs condemning Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Jason Kenney, and pandemic measures.

The convoy’s lead vehicle carried an upside down Canadian flag. The series of vehicles began the trek at about noon and took to each side of Highway One, travelling back and forth doing “laps”.

Organizers said the event was organized by residents through word of mouth. and that they want to send a message that it’s time to abandon all pandemic restrictions.

RCMP officers were on the scene monitoring the situation and told CHAT News, “They’re not breaking the rules. So we don’t see an issue as long as it’s a lawful action.”

Photos on social media showed what appeared to be a blockade at the traffic lights in Dunmore this afternoon. Redcliff RCMP say by the time they arrived there the highway was not being blocked but a few slow-moving vehicles were travelling toward Medicine Hat.

The Coutts border blockade is continuing in its fifth day on Wednesday and people remain on Parliament Hill protesting.
