Seven-year sentence for Tovar-Aguilar on sex assault charges

Jan 19, 2022 | 10:46 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat man who pleaded guilty to six sexual assault-related charges was sentenced this week but will return to court next month on additional charges.

Claudio Tovar-Aguilar was first charged in December 2019 after he was seen allegedly trying to force a woman into a vehicle at the Saamis Tepee. Two months later he was charged in a pair of assaults that took place in July 2019 and another in December of that year, in which victims alleged they were drugged.

Tovar-Aguilar pleaded guilty to the charges in January 2021, later attempting to vacate the pleas claiming he was not fully informed at the time and did not understand what he was agreeing to with the pleas. That application was denied in the fall.

On Monday, Tovar-Aguilar was sentenced to seven years in prison less three years credit for time already spent in custody.
