MEDICINE HAT, AB – A new study by the rental company U-Haul finds Medicine Hat is high on its list of cities for growth.

The Gas City ranked 15th on U-Haul’s list of the “top 25 growth cities” in Canada.

The moving operation says it ranks cities based on the arrival of one-way trucks over the course of the year.

Do-it-yourself movers coming to Medicine Hat rose more than 37 per cent in 2021, while departures increased 25 per cent.

Company officials say the pandemic appears to be a factor in the increase, with families moving from centres like Calgary to smaller cities. where they can work remotely.

“It’s a younger population coming in, schools, and … I think the low taxes and high wages are helping that trend coming into Calgary. And then from Calgary, it’s kind of spreading out to smaller cities like Medicine Hat and Redcliff,” Razmin Mansoub, U-Haul southern Alberta president said.

The company says the rankings are based on cities with the highest year-over-year increases in their markets.
