Late power play dagger sinks Tigers for 15th consecutive loss

BRANDON, MB – For the first time in weeks, the Medicine Hat Tigers were skating late in a game with a chance at their first victory since October 22.

Instead, they suffered the same heartbreaking feeling that has engulfed the team during their now 15-game slide falling by a 6-4 final in Brandon on Tuesday night.

Tied 4-4 late in the third period, the Tabbies allowed a Brett Hyland power play goal with under four minutes remaining and a Marcus Kallionkieli empty netter to see their losing streak creep to 15 games.

It was easily Medicine Hat’s best game in weeks, leading 2-1 after the first period and battling back from three deficits to tie the game but ultimately skated out of Brandon without any points to show for it.

Brandon opened the scoring less than four minutes after puck drop, as Nolan Ritchie was left backdoor who put away a sweet cross-ice feed from Chad Nychuk.

Lukas Svejkovsky was able to tie up the score at 1-1 with a rebound goal three minutes later, before Ashton Ferster tipped a Daniel Baker point shot past Ethan Kruger prior to the end of the frame to put the Tigers up at the intermission.

Medicine Hat gave up that lead six minutes into the second frame however with Nate Danielson ripping a shot glove side on Beckett Langkow on an odd-man rush.

The Wheat Kings re-established their lead shortly afterwards on the power play, as Ridly Greig let a one-timer go to make it a 3-2 Brandon advantage.

Like they did in the first period, the Tigers turned on their offensive jets before the intermission buzzer courtesy of a nifty passing play finished off by Reid Andresen for his first goal of the year.

Tied 3-3 early in the third frame, Brandon took the lead back with Greig scoring his second of the night before Rhett Parsons tied it up once again for Medicine Hat three minutes later with a top-shelf wrister from the right circle.

With under five minutes left, Tigers defenceman Luke Rybinski was tagged with a kneeing penalty which sent Brandon’s top units back to work.

Hyland scored his fifth of the season on a bouncing puck that rattled off Langkow and the post before crossing the line with 4:25 left in regulation.

Kallionkieli sealed it with an empty-net goal a few minutes later, ending any hope of a Medicine Hat comeback.

For his efforts, Langkow was named the game’s third star with a 31-save showing while Svejkovsky netted the 50th goal of his WHL career in the loss.

Setting the record for their longest losing streak in a quarter century, the Tigers march on through Regina on Wednesday for a date with the Pats at 6:00 pm MST.
