‘Really warm feeling about the project’: Coats on Finlay is back next Saturday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Coats on Finlay Bridge event is returning next Saturday and organizers are hoping to surpass the donations from 2019.

The event will run the same as it did on New Year’s Eve two years ago. The community is invited to the bridge and donate warm winter coats by hanging them on Finlay Bridge overnight.

Anyone who needs a coat can help themselves at no cost.

On Saturday, Nov. 13 at 2 p.m., coats, mittens, toques and scarf donations will be accepted on the bridge.

Organizers Helen Snortland and Kym Porter said they are looking for both adult and child winter coats, with a specific need for men’s extra-large coats.

“Two years ago we had five days to prepare and we had about 300 coats,” Snortland said. “We have a few weeks now and are doing a bit more promotion on it. Our coats stretched about a third of the way across the bridge last time so maybe we’ll make it to the end of the bridge.

The Coats on Finlay Bridge event will take place rain or shine, warm or cold. Any leftover clothing items will be taken to The Post the next morning.

“There’s just a really warm feeling about the project,” Snortland said.
