Voting day: Hatters call for change

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A constant theme from some voters outside a Medicine Hat polling station today was it’s time for change.

People were showing up in a steady stream at the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede grandstand building Monday morning.

Most of the voters CHAT News spoke to were hoping council would see significant change after today’s municipal election.

“I voted in some different ones.. we need different (candidates) in.. I think we need a change.. get some of the old boys off (council) and get new ideas on,” one voter said.

Another voter said, “(Medicine Hat) need(s) some change.. things need to improve.”

Meanwhile, some are giving bureaucrats high marks for set-up of the polling station.

“It was really well organized, social distancing was really good. I’ve been here 40 years and never saw so many people’s names on a piece of paper.. (but) time for a change,” one man said. A woman he was with added, “I think we just need some new blood. We need some new vision and I think we’re going to get it this time.”

Another voter expressed concern over having more than 30 names on the ballot for Medicine Hat City Council.

“You have to be fairly well read and fairly well prepared for this and I don’t think people are. Who knows how fair the results are in the end, where as if you had something like a ward system it would be a different thing,” he said.

Another voter admitted to being less than informed going into the polling station.

“Well I’m new to the Hat so I’m not really up on the issues or the personalities.. basically I voted for all the women and no old white guys,” he laughed. “Just a different kind of perspective.”
