‘We will do this for the kids’: Toy Run rolls on Saturday

Sep 9, 2021 | 4:53 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The roar and rumble of motorbikes return Saturday for the 35th Medicine Hat Santa Claus Fund Toy Run.

Committee member Heather McCaig says the need is always great, but that it’s even greater this year. Last year’s event was scaled back due to COVID and the year before the group struggled with the economic downturn.

“We know the need is going to go up again this year and our coffers are pretty empty,” she says. “So we really need toy donations, we need cash donations. Toys we take for 13 and under, cash goes towards the families and towards the teenagers.”

More than 1,400 kids in the community were helped last year thanks to the toy run.

The fun starts at about 9 a.m. at the Irvine Hotel. There’s a pancake breakfast and then the bikes stage over nine blocks in the town.

They leave at 11:30 a.m. and head to Medicine Hat.

“The toy run will hit the city about (11:50) and it will take up Dunmore Road all the way down to Crestwood Pool,” says McCaig. “So we need people to know we will be blocking that road and they won’t be able to cross it. So if they do want to come watch, which we love, that’s where people want to go and get a nice seat.”

The ride ends at the Stampede grounds where there will be live music, a barbecue and more festivities. Limited edition 35th anniversary hats will be for sale.

McCaig says organizers have been proactive in following public health measures and COVID safety protocols. Some traditional activities have been cancelled, everyone will be spaced out and all volunteers will wear masks.

Anyone who doesn’t ride can drop off donations at the Stampede grounds on the day or beforehand at Badlands Harley-Davidson in Dunmore.

“We’re really urging the community to come out and I know Medicine Hat always steps up,” says McCaig. “Rain or shine we know that bikers will be there, the community will be there and we will do this for the kids.”
