Premier Jason Kenney, Health Minister Tyler Shandro, chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw and AHS CEO Dr. Verna Yiu will provide a COVID-19 update at 11:30 a.m.

The provincial COVID-19 cabinet committee met on Thursday and on a Facebook livestream Wednesday the premier said Albertans can expect an announcement from his government this week.

Journalists in Edmonton say a mask mandate was discussed, as well as monetary incentives to promote vaccinations.

The Facebook livestream Kenney’s first appearance in public since Aug. 9. Since then active cases in Alberta have risen from 3,390 to 12,868 yesterday. Hospitalizations and ICU admissions have gone from 129 and 26 to 487 and 114, respectively.

In Medicine Hat today there are 553 active cases, up from 242 on Aug. 9. Medicine Hat Regional Hospital has 27 COVID in-patients, five in the ICU.

The fourth wave is being driven by the highly contagious Delta variant.
