MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three paintings by a Medicine Hat artist will make an impact on the other side of the world.

“I do my art for the sheer pleasure of it and it’s interesting when it finds its homes. But one of my greatest joys is to let it go to fundraising,” says Linda Kriel.

Kriel donated the paintings to Mary’s Meals Canada’s Heart of India campaign. Mary’s Meals provides food for almost two million children each school day.

They’re not just any paintings, either. One is a painting done from a photograph of a girl from India eating her food.

“She just caught my attention. Her eyes were demanding and she was just somebody that inspired me to make this difference,” says Kriel. “She looked like a child who needed to fulfill her dreams of her health. I like painting people and I enjoy painting eyes and looking into eyes and let them tell a story.”

Another painting is of Mother Teresa, who Kriel and Mary’s Meals Canada executive director Sheri McConnell thought would be a good icon for the auction.

The final painting is an abstract one, described by Kriel as very vibrant, full of colours and with abstract hearts she says look like the heart of India.

Kriel is drawn to Mary Meals because it connects feeding the hungry with education.

“They’re only given in the school setting, so they’re working together with education the children as well,” she says. “The reports of how the children are excelling academically because they have food in their tummies is pretty exciting.”

She adds Mary’s Meals has very low overhead and that for every one dollar you give, 93 cents is going to go to charitable activities.

“There’s no greater need than hunger and children going hungry when there’s so many of us that have in this world, to me that’s just a basic right.”
