Nurses to hold informational picket outside Medicine Hat Regional Hospital

Aug 11, 2021 | 11:11 AM

Medicine Hat, AB–Thousands of nurses across the province are rallying outside hospitals today including here in Medicine Hat.

The rally outside the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital is scheduled to begin at 11:30.

The informational pickets are to protest a proposed 3 percent wage rollback. The United Nurses of Alberta has been trying to negotiate a new collection agreement with the Provincial Government.

According to the Union, the rollback is on top of other cutbacks including the elimination of semi annual lump sum payments and reduced shift and weekend premiums.

Nurses are also raising concerns about understaffing and closed beds and the impact that has on patient care.

Minister of Treasury Board and Finance Travis Toews issued a statement about the information pickets stating; “Our government is truly appreciative of the hard work and dedication that health care professionals – especially nurses – have shown over the last 18 months.”

Toews added “We respect the rights of all Albertans to express their opinions on matters important to them.”

More to come…..
