Fire ban still in effect

Outdoor safety tips ahead of the long weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – As we head into this long weekend, the fire department has some tips on making it a safe one.

The fire ban from June 28 remains in place across Medicine Hat, Cypress County and in Alberta provincial parks. This means there’s no opening burning, fire pits or charcoal barbecues.

Rough-cut mowing operations are also suspended because of the dry conditions.

Fire captain Jason Van Dam says if you’re going to be near water this weekend, these are a few things to remember.

“Make sure you have the proper life-saving devices with you, including life preservers if hitting the water,” Van Dam said. “Refrain from drinking alcohol when on the water.”

He encourages everyone to be diligent with safety measures, especially with the heat and dry weather.
