Altawana Drive recycling depot moving to Northlands

MEDICINE HAT, AB – When you take your cardboard and plastic to recycle at the end of the month, there will be a new location in the city’s northeast.

The City of Medicine Hat and South Country Co-op have partnered to relocate the existing drop-off recycling depot in Riverside to the parking lot of the Northlands Co-op at 20 Northlands Way NE.

On Thursday, July 29, the recycling depot located behind the Shamrock Bottle Depot at 172 Altawana Drive NE will close permanently.

Signs to notify users of the relocation will be installed at the current location by tomorrow.

The new location at Northlands Way is in the parking lot north of the carwash and west of the building currently occupied by KFC.

According to the city, since the implementation of residential blue carts, recycling depots have experienced a 65 per cent reduction in the amount of recyclable materials at drop-off locations. Depots remain vital for small business owners and those living in multi-residential buildings and can accept larger items that do not fit in the residential recycling cart.

In July 2020, the City closed the drop-off recycling depot on South Railway Street near the Redi Bottle Depot. The three remaining sites at Northlands, Kipling Street and Medicine Hat Mall provide geographic coverage to the north, central, and south areas of the community. Acceptable materials include paper, cardboard, plastic 1-7, tin and glass. Note that glass is not accepted in the blue cart due to safety concerns, but is allowed at the drop-off locations.
