MEDICINE HAT, AB – The transformation of downtown began this morning as shovels hit the ground at 603 First St.

The city hosted a groundbreaking ceremony signifying the start of construction for the Waterfront District.

The current parking lot on the corner of First Street and Sixth Avenue will become the gateway to downtown.

Construction will happen throughout the summer with landscaping to follow. The city hopes it will be ready to use later in the fall.

Chris Perret with Invest Medicine Hat says a lot will be included in the construction.

“Food truck alley where people can come down at lunchtime, flex space in this area where we can hold events, a pop-up market on First Street there,” Perret said. “Easily converted into some really nice event space and gathering space on the waterfront.”

Hatter’s can also expect an outdoor skating area in the colder months.

The city plans to keep the same amount of space and for the project to be completed before the first snowfall.
