Nominations for Community Spirit Awards still being accepted

MEDICINE HAT, AB – You still have three days to submit your nomination for the City of Medicine Hat’s 2021 Community Spirit Awards.

The deadline for nominations is June 7 at 4:30 p.m.

Individuals, teams, groups and businesses can be nominated in the following categories.

  • Arts/Culture
  • Sports/Recreation
  • Compassion
  • Environment
  • Community Inclusion
  • Volunteerism
  • Civic Pride

The two Awards of Excellence are the Heart of Medicine Hat Award and the Change Maker Award.

The Heart of Medicine Hat Award is for an individual, organization or business who, outside of their core business, has made a major contribution to enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat in a variety of areas for at least the past 15 years.

The Change Maker Award is for an individual, organization or business who, outside of their core business, has made a major contribution to enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat in the past five years through innovation, advocacy, or leadership through social, economic or urban development.

In addition, the Community Spirit Awards also include an ongoing Awards of Achievement category, reserved to recognize individuals or teams in two categories, Arts/Culture and Sports/Recreation. These nominations will be accepted and awards will be given throughout the year.

Requirements for nominations include:

  • A completed Community Spirit Awards nomination form
  • A brief biography/resume of the nominee
  • A letter of support from the nominator
  • Any additional information that supports the application
  • A high-quality digital image of the nominee

Nominees can be residents of Medicine Hat, Redcliff or Cypress County, however, the extraordinary contribution(s) must benefit residents of Medicine Hat. However, the nominator must be a resident of Medicine Hat.

Nominees must agree to the nomination.

The city says that since 1979, more than 130 Civic Awards have been awarded, recognizing dedicated community contributors and their enhancements of the quality of life in Medicine Hat.

The city plans to present the awards at a ceremony at the Esplanade in October. A virtual ceremony may be needed if COVID restrictions are still in effect.
