EDMONTON – Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says he’s been assured that Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.’s deal to buy U.S. rival Kansas City Southern will not result in job losses in Calgary.
Kenney tweeted that he’s been briefed by the companies, and says Calgary will remain the global headquarters for the merged firm while Kansas City, Missouri, will house its U.S. headquarters.
He says the combined rail network will allow CP to “seamlessly to transport Alberta energy directly to Gulf Coast refineries.”
Executives say the merger must be approved by the Surface Transportation Board, but doesn’t require regulatory approvals in Canada or Mexico.
