MEDICINE HAT — The next step in protecting the Harlow subdivision from flooding is about to begin.

Heavy equipment is being moved into position to begin the work of clearing brush and trees along the area where the final leg of the Harlow flood protection berm will be built.

The initial work is planned to begin next week behind homes along Finlay Court S.W.

Municipal engineer Carlie Collier with the city’s municipal works department says the contractor will then start knitting the final 450-metre leg onto the existing berm when weather allows in the spring.

“There will be a tie-in aspect,” says Collier. “We want to ensure a good connection with the east end of Phase 1.”

But there will be some slight adjustments to the existing alignment in the transition from phase one to phase two.

Collier says the city has been working with property owners in the area, some of whom have said in the past they don’t want the berm at all because it will lower their property values.

She reminds pedestrians to stay clear of the work area and to watch for signs advising about trail closures and parking restrictions.
