REDCLIFF, AB — An aspiring Redcliff baker isn’t letting the extra free time that she’s had during the pandemic go to waste.

For a while now 13-year-old Shay North has been baking for fun.

“I like to do baking for fun, my mom came up with the idea and helped me to sell my baking and I’m thinking about starting a baking YouTube channel,” she said, adding she’d like to get a start in a local bakery.

A week ago her mother posted in the Everything Redcliff Facebook group that she would be taking orders for home baked pies and cheesecakes.

Within a few days she had to stop taking orders in order to catch up on the demand.

“At some point it was a little bit overwhelming with all of the orders but mostly I was pretty excited that so many people wanted me to bake for them,” said Shay.

Shay started taking orders again Wednesday through her Facebook page called The True North Kitchen.

Her mom Jennifer said it’s been an exciting time for the family.

“To see her be so passionate about something and to see her pursue that and to see other people interested in that and wanting to support her,” Jennifer said. “Especially right now when things are so gloomy of lack of a better word. Money is tight and spirits are low and to have people want to support her and spend money on her is humbling.”

For now they’re only taking and delivering orders for Redcliff and Medicine Hat, but they may have to expand that if it takes off after the Christmas season.
