Cypress County reminds of barn fire safety

Dec 3, 2020 | 1:38 PM

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB – The Cypress County Fire Department has some reminders when it comes to barn fire safety this time of year.

Deputy Fire Chief John McBain says they responded to one barn fire so far this year.

It was a dog house and no animal was inside.

He advises keeping electrical outlets free of cobwebs, sawdust, and straw.

And says a lot of times it could be the animal tipping something over or human error by not having heaters on a sturdy surface.

“Not using extension cords, try to plug it in directly if you are using a heater, making sure that heater is secure so it can’t be tipped over. Water troughs, making sure if you are using a floating heater that the animal can’t lift it out and put it into the straw or whatever is next to it.”

As for moisture in the region, McBain says it’s pretty good with decent snow cover.
