MEDICINE HAT, AB – The man accused in a violent assault of a gas station owner and his son was denied in his bid to loosen his bail restrictions Friday at Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench.

Anwar Kamaran’s defence lawyer argued that his client has no criminal record at all, let alone one involving a violent act and the conditions which allow him to be in Walsh only two evenings a week are onerous.

However, Justice Vaughan Hartigan sided with the Crown’s argument that ensuring the safety of the public in general, and the alleged victims specifically, required the release conditions to be maintained under the circumstances.

Kamaran, 44, was arrested on Aug. 9 and charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm after it’s alleged he assaulted Geoff Shoesmith and his son David.

Kamaran and the Shoesmiths had been involved in a price war involving their respective neighbouring gas stations they operated in the Hamlet of Walsh prior to it erupting into violence.

Kamaran had been on release conditions at the time that required him not to have contact with the Shoesmith family.

Those released conditions were imposed following an alleged assault of Carol Shoesmith on Aug. 8 – charges which have since been dismissed.

Kamaran’s next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 1 to set a trial date on the assault allegations.
