Alberta4All independence movement makes landing in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT– Representatives from a pro-Alberta autonomy movement made an appearance in Medicine Hat Saturday to speak to local residents and talk about the common-sense plan for independence.

Alberta4All, the pro-independence group, argues the province, despite its contributions to the country has been getting the short end of the stick in comparison to its provincial counterparts and is hoping to bring a majority independent Alberta government by 2023 .

“ Alberta since 1905 has been a place where Albertans have worked hard but ultimately the benefits are being sent back to eastern Canada for their benefit. So the GDP associated with spending today is $41 billion a year benefits eastern Canada and their businesses and doesn’t affect and benefit us in the least. So the harder we work as Albertans and we produce for Canada the more goes back to the east at our expense,” said Executive Director CW Alexander.

Alberta4All is not a political party, according to Alexander, rather it consists of 87 societies around the province, including one in Medicine Hat, that have independent non-partisan representatives that people can vote for during the election.

Alexender became drawn to the idea of independence back in 2018, after doing some research. Alexender along with 44 other people formed the Alberta Independence Party and ran during the last election. According to Alexander, the issues within the confederation are structural, institutional, and cultural and independence will allow Albertans to thrive.

“Independence will help Albertans because we will be unleashed from the fundamental, entrenched, unfixable issues that exist within the confederation. So the structural issues of under-representation, at both the parliamentary and senate level, the institutional problems associated with a constitutional monarchy that doesn’t serve the people with too many special interests, foreign interests, and federalist interests that are not now in the interest of Albertans.”

The organization also believes in eliminating the carbon tax and reducing taxes to benefit the people.

As for the skeptics, who don’t believe the province can be fully independent, Alexender said the reward far outweighs the risks.

“ What I’d say to the skeptics is the risks of leaving are far less than the risk of staying, and the benefits of leaving are far greater than the benefits of staying.”
