Schools temporarily closed due to COVID-19 outbreak at Siksika First Nation

All four schools on the Siksika First Nation are closed for the rest of the week as it deals with a sharp rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

The First Nation has also closed its homeless shelter and has suspended visitation at the Siksika Elders Lodge.

Active COVID-19 cases being managed by Siksika Health have risen from zero to 14 in the past few days.

As of the latest update on the Siksika Health Facebook page, there have been 49 positive cases managed by it since March 24.

Siksika Health Services has developed a COVID-19 Risk Scale, which defines risk level associated with local COVID-19 activity.

“At this time, the risk level of COVID-19 spread on Siksika Nation is at a YELLOW – MODERATE RISK level,” says this morning’s update. “There is presently moderate, controlled COVID-19 activity on the Nation, with numerous, controlled clusters of COVID-19 cases, as advised by Siksika Health Services’ Communicable Disease Control (CDC) Team. Community members should limit gatherings, both informal social gatherings, and formal gatherings.”
