Community organizations ensuring Thanksgiving is accessible to all

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three organizations in the city will be doing their part to ensure that no one goes hungry and that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a delicious thanksgiving meal this long weekend.

On Monday Oct.12, The Mustard Seed will be handing out takeout Thanksgiving meals outside the Champion centre at 435 North Railway.

The meals will be distributed from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

“Thanksgiving is an amazing time of the year. We need to stop and give thanks and think about why Thanksgiving is important it’s because it is time to be thankful and at the same point we all have that need every day for a meal so there’s no reason why our homeless and vulnerable would not receive a meal. So we feel it is very important, and they should be fed as well like the rest of us,” said managing director of The Mustard Seed Colette Eirich.

Twelve donated turkeys along with all the fixings will be used to create the meals. Desert will also be served.

Later in the day, the Salvation Army will also be giving out Thanksgiving meals.

From 5p.m. to 6p.m. turkey and homemade desserts will be distributed to visitors of the resource centre.

Similar to the Mustard Seed, the meals will be packaged in take-out containers to COVID-19 protocols and guests are required to line up at a social distance outside to receive their meal.

Captain David Dale of the Salvation Army in Medicine Hat says last year over 100 people received a Thanksgiving meal and they are expecting a similar demand this weekend.

“So this Thanksgiving we want to make sure that meals are provided for the vulnerable population, alot of the people we serve every day and we just want to do something special for them on Thanksgiving during this COVID-19 season,” said Dale.

On Friday, 285 meals were distributed at the Medicine Hat and District Food book, courtesy of Ross from Roscoes Pub. The meals were handed out during their drive-thru distribution. Some of the meals were also shared with residents living in permanent supportive housing.
