Final farmers’ market of 2020 is this weekend

Oct 2, 2020 | 11:50 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Tomorrow is your last chance to grab fresh vegetables, baked goods and homemade creations at the Medicine Hat Farmers’ Market.

Due to COVID-19 the markets started later than usual this year but coordinator Dorren Gunderson says everyone was up to the challenge of pulling it off.

As expected, attendance from vendors and customers was down a little. Gunderson says in regular years anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 customers come through the doors each week to shop at about 55 vendors. This year the numbers were closer to 1,100 and 40.

All things considered, Gunderson says she’s pleased with how many vendors and customers attended over the past 16 weeks.

“It’s been a very supportive community and the vendors, a huge thank you to everyone that came out and supported it,” she said. “It was really an uncertain time this season but we’re really excited with the turnout and we can’t wait to do it again.”

Extra safety measures were put in place due to the pandemic, Gunderson adds, and says many told her that they felt safe week after week.

The final market is at the Cypress Centre from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.
