Small uptick in air travel at the local airport

Jun 24, 2020 | 10:17 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – There has been a very small uptick in air traffic at the Medicine Hat Regional Airport.

But airport manager Jeff Huntus says there are still only two flights a week at the local airport on Thursdays and Sundays.

He’s hopeful that once air traffic picks up in Calgary that we will reap the benefits.

Huntus says airlines and airports are doing everything they can to make people feel confident when travelling.

It includes protocols for cleaning and physical distancing.

He believes West Jet is booking at 50 percent capacity on their planes.

And masks are also required. But if you are unable to wear a mask for medical or health reasons, a doctor’s note is needed.

“New rules by Transport Canada require all passengers to wear masks when they check-in. Wear masks when they go through security when they go out the departure gate, and all the time when they’re on the aircraft so it’s quite rigorous,” Huntus said.

Local travel consultant with the Travel Agent Next Door Jennifer Kirby says there will be a lot of changes when it comes to travelling, especially air travel.

She has spent most of this year cancelling trips due to the advisory and border closure.

Some have been able to postpone their trip and some have bookings for later in 2021.

Kirby says you can book flights and tours with flexible options, or change your dates without extra costs, or cancel. But some airlines or tours might offer a travel credit to use in the future instead.

“People are hesitant to book right now because of the advisory of course that it’s not recommended to travel internationally still and that makes it difficult to get travel insurance with comprehensive coverage which is extremely important for when you’re travelling internationally,” she said.

Kirby says road trips are more popular this time of year and expect they will still be popular.
