MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Public Library received a public shout out from an Academy Award winning actor Wednesday night.

Russell Crowe mentioned the library in response to a tweet posted by singer Alan Doyle, who was performing at the Esplanade Wednesday evening.

Doyle had been posting multiple tweets prior to the show in Medicine Hat, and quoted a tweet from the library promoting his non-fiction works which were available.

“If Alan’s performance tonight leaves you wanting to know more about his life, borrow his books from us,” the tweet from the library reads.

Doyle’s account responded to the post, simply writing “Books!” in all caps.

Crowe quote-tweeted Doyle’s post adding “The Medicine Hat library (sic) has a great idea.”

Gilliam Reimer, the head of marketing services with the library, says she was surprised to see the tweet.

“At first I thought it was definitely a spoof account,” she said. “Why would Russell Crowe be talking about our little library, but it’s legit. It’s the guy we’ve watched in “Gladiator” and “Cinderella Man” and “A Beautiful Mind,” and he was tweeting about our library.”

Reimer added Crowe is the most famous person who has mentioned the library online.

“I never thought I would see someone of that calibre talking about our little library,” she said. “I think it kind of shows that people like Russell Crowe and Alan Doyle, they support libraries. At the very least, they’re encouraging reading, so I think that’s really good to see.”

Crowe and Doyle are friends. The pair have collaborated musically, and Doyle acted with Crowe in the 2010 film “Robin Hood.”
