Melhoff to head Invest Medicine Hat

Veteran city business leader named as managing director of Invest Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former head of the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce has been named as Managing Director of the newly created Invest Medicine Hat department at city hall.

Jason Melhoff will lead the new in-house economic development unit for the city.

He begins his new role on Monday.

Robert Nicolay, the city’s chief administrative officer, says Melhoff’s experience, including 15 years of running businesses in Medicine Hat, will help benefit Invest Medicine Hat.

“He’s known by the community, and he knows the community, so he’s got that unique opportunity to really reflect the values of the community and also pursue business opportunities, economic development opportunities to grow those values,” he said on Tuesday.

Invest Medicine Hat was brought back under city control in August of 2019, after operating through an external contract for four years.

In a release the city says the new Invest Medicine Hat will continue to focus on investment attraction, but with a more comprehensive economic development approach that includes land development and sales, business retention and expansion, and marketing and communications.

“It’s a very broad portfolio, but specifically targeted to achieve smart growth in Medicine Hat,” said Nicolay. “That’s growth that really is valuable for the community.”
