Raiders steal win in final seconds

Feb 6, 2020 | 5:25 AM

MEDICINE HAT —Aliaksei Protas (Washington Capitals) scored with 7 seconds to play in regulation, then scored 8 seconds into overtime as the Prince Albert Raiders topped the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-3 Wednesday.

Baxter Anderson and Daniil Stepanov traded goals 80 seconds apart in the first period. Nick McCarry restored the Tigers’ one-goal lead early in the second, but Justin Nachbaur’s seventh of the year tied up the game minutes later.

McCarry’s second of the night with 4:28 left in regulation looked to be the decisive goal in the contest until Protas tapped in the puck off a last-chance rush with the goalie pulled. Off the opening face-off in overtime, the Raiders capitalized off a turnover just inside the blue line and the ensuing odd-man rush featured Brayden Watts setting up Protas for the game-winning goal.

Finishing with 30 saves, Max Paddock earned the victory.

The loss, combined with a 7-6 win by Lethbridge over Red Deer, leaves the Tigers two points behind the Hurricanes for second place in the Central Division.

The Tigers head to Brandon for a game against the Wheat Kings on Friday, followed by a visit with the Ice in Winnipeg on Saturday.
