Medicine Hat men arrested following alleged theft in Redcliff

Jan 30, 2020 | 2:31 PM

REDCLIFF, AB — Two men from Medicine Hat are facing charges in connection with a theft from a motor vehicle earlier in January.

On January 1, Redcliff RCMP attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle seen driving around an industrial area without its lights on. The vehicle did not stop and fled from police, and was later located abandoned approximately 20 minutes later, stuck in the snow at the end of a rural road.

When officers searched the vehicle, break-in instruments and a small amount of stolen property was found, which police say was stolen from a motor vehicle earlier in the day. Police also located a still-frozen Slushee that was partially consumed, leading them to search surveillance footage from local stores, which was used to identify the suspects.

Benjamin Gregory Boyd, 26, was charged with flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited.

Tony Curtis Bear, 34, was charged with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime and one count of possession of break-in instruments.

Redcliff RCMP obtained arrest warrants on Wednesday. Boyd was located at Drumheller Institution, while Bear was located at the Calgary Remand Centre. The pair were both arrested on unrelated matters on January 24.

A court date has not yet been set for the Redcliff charges.
