Hat MP’s petition to stop feds from banning “military assault-style rifles” gaining steam

Medicine Hat, AB – Tens of thousands of Canadians have signed Medicine Hat MP Glen Motz’s petition asking the federal government not to ban “military assault-style rifles.”

Motz’s says such a ban would, “have zero impact on public safety.”

The e-petition was launched last month and so far has garnered more than 90,000 signatures.

It notes “military assault-style rifles” is not a legally defined category while a buy back program of guns could cost Canadian taxpayers more than a quarter-of-a-billion dollars.

“If there are areas we need to address to improve public safety, let’s have that conversation,” said Motz. “If there are gaps in the system we need to fix, let’s do that.”

But targeting law-abiding Canadian gun owners who are already heavily regulated and licensed as well as to do so through cabinet and not the House of Commons should not be acceptable, said Motz.

“There is a whole lot of misinformation out there floating around about who needs an AR-15,” said Motz. “But what is an AR-15? It shoots a .223-calibre round which is a small hunting calibre.”

The local MP also outlined a ban on military assault-style rifles would have a negative effect on those who manufacturer them as well as those who legally sell them.
