Recent locker thefts at Family Leisure Centre

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Family Leisure Centre (FLC) is encouraging users to leave valuables at home with a recent spike in locker thefts.

The FLC says thieves are targeting unlocked lockers and locks with a key in the change rooms.

Medicine Hat Police received five reports of thefts late last week.

They say thefts seem to come and go, with the last wave at the beginning of December, and July and August of last year.

Police say they have been working with the FLC so they can increase their security procedures.

“What’s occurring is suspects are going into the leisure centre and going into the unlocked change rooms and it appears they are picking locks or disabling some of the locks and searching for wallets and looking for cash, gift cards, that type of thing,” according to Inspector Brent Secondiak.

Manager of Recreation Dave Young says thefts tend to happen between 9 am-noon on during their busy time. “So some of the things we’re looking at is obviously we do have video surveillance in the building, and just heighten the resolution, the memory, and things like that with that system. We’re going to extend our staff presence. During those times of the day, we’re going to have more staff presence in the area and just monitor what’s going on. Really looking for anything that’s suspicious or people who just don’t belong in the area.”

“It’s a difficult building because it is a large building and we don’t have just one central control point where people can access the building. We do have a lot of grandparents and parents that do come in the building and watch their grandkids and kids participate in activities, so it is a harder thing for us to control,” according to Young.

He adds the thefts have been happening more with the key locks versus the combination locks.

To secure your belongings, combination locks are available for purchase at the Family Leisure Centre.
