CYPRESS COUNTY, AB – Alberta Major Crimes is investigation after a man’s body was found south of Medicine Hat on Monday morning.

According to RCMP, officers responded to a report of a man’s body on a rural road south of the city and east of Highway 3 at around 11:00 am on Monday.

Police have since ruled the man’s death as suspicious and an autopsy on the body is scheduled to take place on Wednesday.

After taking stock of the scene, Redcliff RCMP S/Sgt. Sean Maxwell said they made the call to Alberta RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit.

“Members attended to the scene and found that the whole area looked suspicious, so we called the Major Crimes Unit out,” said Maxwell. “The Major Crimes Unit has attended and they’ve taken carriage of the investigation at this point.”

There is no word yet on the name, age, or identity of the victim.

Despite the discovery of the body, Maxwell doesn’t believe the general public is at any increased risk.

“I don’t believe that there is right now, but the investigation is obviously still ongoing,” said Maxwell. “We’re not allowed to say anything further at this point unfortunately. There will be more coming, just when it will come out is determined through the process of the investigation overall.”

RCMP members and the Forensic Identification Section remain at the scene to conduct their investigation, which has closed down the intersection of Township Road 114 and Range Road 61.

We’ll have more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
