Medicine Hat, AB – The Tongue on the Post Fesitval has grown into one of the city’s largest multi-day music shows and, according to organizers, one of the largest winter folk music events on the prairies.

Starting Jan. 20, a number of venues across the city with host shows with main acts playing during the week at Medalta.

Rob Pape, Medicine Hat Folk Music Club executive director, says the show has taken on a life of its own over the years and is now creating buzz for the city from coast to coast in Canada.

“It’s our absolute favourite time of the year,” said Pape. “We all look forward to this, it’s a great opportunity to get people out of the house and to warm up with some music and dancing.”

Pape said the festival can draw a lot of talent due to it being one of the few winter folk music events.

And word has gotten out.

“In 14 years, we’ve grown every year. It’s phenomenal to see how the community has come together, the musicians and everything else that comes along with it,” said Pape.

Opening act for the main show on Jan. 25 is local musician Derek Hintz whose musical stylings have been entertaining Hatters for years.

And the festival has been a chance to get even better.

“It’s really pushed me to be a better musician, playing with different musicians. It forces you to really open up to everything that is going on,” said Hintz.

If your not too sure if folk music is your thing, Zucchini Blossom’s owner Kristine Dalzell said the free shows at most of the city’s independent coffee shops are a place to check things out.

“It’s a packed house every time. The folk fans in this town are unbelievable and it doesn’t matter if they know the person or don’t know the person – they pack the place out,” said Dalzell.

More information on the festival can be found on the Tongue on the Post Facebook page.
