Tips to reduce screen time

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three sessions on limiting screen time for kids is taking place at the Medicine Hat Public Library over the next couple of months.

The first session is tonight which will include speakers from Alberta Health Services. That presentation will focus on the impacts of screen time.

Medicine Hat Police Service will also present in February to talk about internet safety.

Chief Librarian Ken Feser says tonight is an introduction to the topic of screen time and talking about some of the reasons why, especially with younger children, we might want to limit that, or just be careful with excessive screen time.

He says screen time is an issue that’s becoming increasingly important, and kids have so much access these days. “More are getting devices for Christmas, so it’s a good time to talk about this.”

As for tips to limit screen time, Feser encourages kids to read a book.

“Being a librarian that would be my first thought, but it is true especially for younger children there’s research that shows the risk of predators and dangerous content, things like that on the internet. But in general, research shows that screen time is not really a great thing, especially a lot of screen time. It’s not associated with good outcomes in terms of learning and brain development.”

He says its important kids do other things that include imaginative play, socialization, and reading books.

Reading picture books with parents is a really important and powerful means of developing young minds, according to Feser.

Modelling behaviour is an important way to teach kids as well. “So when kids see adults reading books, it is a very important way to encourage reading habits in kids.”

The three-part Limiting Screen Time sessions start tonight at the Medicine Hat Public Library.

Sessions on February 5 and March 4 will follow. They all take place from 7 pm-9 pm at the library.
