AHS says person with measles visited multiple locations in Calgary and Cochrane

CALGARY, AB — Albertans who visited multiple stores, businesses and restaurants in Calgary and Cochrane over the past week may have been exposed to measles.

Alberta Health Services released the information Thursday afternoon, noting an individual with lab-confirmed measles visited several public places in Calgary and Cochrane between Match 5 and 12.

“We first learned the case of lab-confirmed measles on March 13 in the Calgary Zone, and it is travel-related,” said Dr. Jia Hu, Medical Officer of Health in the Calgary Zone, over the phone on Thursday.

A list of locations and times for potential exposure are listed below.

Measles, which is spread through the air, can be prevented through immunization. Symptoms include a fever of 38.3 degrees Celsius or higher, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a red blotchy rash that appears three to seven days after the fever starts. The rash starts behind the ears and on the face, before spreading down the body and to the arms and legs.

Hu says they’re reminding people to keep an eye out for the symptoms, and call Health Link at 811 before they visit their doctor.

He says AHS also encourages people to be vaccinated.

“The other thing we recommend, in general, for everybody is to try to ensure their immunization status is up to date,” he said. “Measles is very, very infectious, but the vaccine is very, very effective, and it’s really the best way of protecting yourself against measles.”

AHS says in the release that individuals exposed during the time frames on March 12 and who have no history of receiving a vaccine against the measles, are eligible for a preventative vaccine at Brentwood Mall on Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

“It is imperative that only those who are eligible, as per this above criteria, attend this clinic,” the release states. “This ensures AHS has the opportunity to immunize those who can still benefit, at this time, from the preventative treatment.”

Those who were exposed on dates other than March 12 are no longer eligible for preventative vaccine clinic, says AHS. Those individuals are advised to review their immunization history and  call Health Link at 811 for advice or to book an appointment at their local community health centre.

Health Link can also be called to review your immunization history.
