MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat’s Bob Wanner will be celebrated at the provincial legislature on Monday.

The former Speaker of the Legislature will have an official portrait unveiled in the legislature during a special ceremony Monday morning.

Wanner says he is honoured to be recognized for his time in office.

“The whole last four and a half years of my life have been surreal,” he said. “To now end up with a portrait hanging in a legislative assembly as a part of Alberta history is really a privilege and an honour that goes far beyond me.”

Wanner was elected in the riding of Medicine Hat during the 2015 election with the NDP. He served as Speaker of the Legislature during his entire term.

Wanner announced in late 2018 he would not seek a second term as MLA.

All former premiers, lieutenant governors and speakers of the legislature are recognized with official portraits in the legislature.

The portrait is set to be unveiled at 10:30 a.m.

The ceremony will be hosted by current speaker Nathan Cooper, and includes remarks from Transportation Minister Ric McIver on behalf of Premier Jason Kenney, and NDP leader Rachel Notley.
