Police looking for suspect after woman assaulted with weapon

Nov 28, 2019 | 11:37 AM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Police Service is investigating after a woman was assaulted with a weapon Wednesday night.

According to a release from police Thursday morning, they received a call at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday in an alley in the 500 block of North Railway Street for reports of a stabbing.

Police found a 34-year-old woman who sustained a small cut on her hand from an unknown male.

Police say the woman caught the man rummaging through her vehicle and stealing items. A brief physical confrontation occurred, resulting in the woman being cut on the hand. The man fled the scene. A K9 track was initiated, but was called off due to weather.

Staff Sergeant Rod Thompson says the incident serves as a reminder for residents to call police when they catch criminals in the act, and not try to handle the situation on their own.

“We’re trained and equipped to deal with those sorts of things,” he said. “So, in order for the public to deal with that sort of thing, when they don’t know who they’re dealing with and they don’t have the proper training or tools, it puts them in a very dangerous situation that we don’t want to see.”

The suspect is described as an Indigenous male between 25 and 30 years old. He is approximately 6 feet tall with a thin build and was wearing a dark jacket.

Anyone with info is asked to call the police service at 403-529-8481.
