City trying to break down barriers for people to be more physical active

Medicine Hat, AB – The city of Medicine Hat and the Family Leisure Centre are trying to get more young people engaged in physical activity with their new “Breaking Down Barriers” campaign.

According to Statistics Canada, two in 10 adults and just one in 10 youth are reaching their daily recommended amount of physical activity.

“There’s a variety of troubling statistics out there, health statistics that we know can be directly combated with appropriate physical activity. Yet people feel like they still have a barrier,” said Terra Petryshyn, recreation program coordinator at the Family Leisure Centre.

That’s why the campaign is focusing on physical literacy and getting people more engaged.

“It’s really so people can gain the competence and the confidence and so that they know how to move their body. And they’re confident in being physically active,” said Petryshyn.

The program, as well as focusing on physical activity education, is helping promote free and low-cost programs.

Including Kinsmen free skates and their sponsored Toonie swims.

“We want people to make sure they know that they can have access to here at the Family Leisure Centre,” Petryshyn said.

They are kicking off the campaign with a group of new interactive programs that use augmented reality on Snapchat.

“You’ll actually get the lens on Snapchat. And you can back up and basically put the poster into your phone and it will start animating right in front of you,” explained Bailey Warner, the interactive designer with Tag Concepts.

Petryshyn is hopeful that by using this kind of technology, it will catch the attention of youth and young adults.

“We cater to the really young demographic as well as the senior demographic. But we do have a little bit of a gap in the middle as far as our age statistics go. And so we think that’s exactly the group we’re going to target with this campaign,” she said.

Warner agreed.

“Snapchat is on almost everybody’s phone right now and it was really convenient. But using augmented reality as a whole is really engaging for young people and I think everyone in general. But bringing kind of the digital life to the community is I think really important.”

The posters will be at the Family Leisure Centre and around the city.
