Liberal Party names candidate for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Liberal Party of Canada has named a candidate for the Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner riding, just days before the deadline to register.

Harris Kirshenbaum is listed on the party’s website as the candidate for the riding as of Friday morning.

“Harris Kirshenbaum will be our Liberal candidate in the next general election in October after having successfully completed the Team Trudeau Nominations Process in Medicine Hat—Cardston—Warner,” a message on the party’s official website reads.

A nomination meeting occurred Wednesday, according to the party’s website.

Kirshenbaum, reached late Friday in Calgary, says he looking forward to the campaign, his first as a candidate.

“In my view, there is a great deal of work to be done, and I think the forward thrust of the existing Liberal government has been very positive and very strong, and I’m honoured to be able to help them continue it,” he said.

Kirshenbaum, who has lived in Calgary for the past 20 years, is a retired consultant who has worked on multiple Liberal Party campaigns at both the provincial and federal level. He says he plans on attending the Chamber of Commerce’s election forum next week on October 2.

According to Elections Canada, five candidates have officially filed their nomination papers to run in the riding.

Glen Motz (Conservative Party of Canada) is seeking his second term in office in the riding. Also currently on the ballot are Andrew Nelson (People’s Party of Canada), Shannon Hawthorne (Green Party of Canada), Elizabeth Thomson (NDP) and independent candidate Dave Phillips.

Candidates have until Monday to register their candidacy with Elections Canada. The final candidate list will be available on October 2.

Election day is October 21.
