Medicine Hat, AB – Municipal enforcement is reminding Medicine Hat of proper rules surrounding fire pits and outdoor burning heading into the long weekend.

Although Cypress County currently has a fire ban, the city does not.

According to bylaw supervisor Heather Trail, there must be a minimun of three metres from any building, property lines, trees, or combustible materials.

“If you have a backyard fire pit you do need a permit for that. And that permit is something that is available for you to look into and get from our fire hall. Of course the general rules about these things is you need to keep your fire maintained and in the pit.” She continued. “It should be watched all of the time. And make sure you have the means to put that fire out. And also it’s important that you only burn dry, clean wood. And that your pit is in a place that is safe according to the permit that you have.”
