Saskatchewan to begin universal coverage of abortion pill

Jun 7, 2019 | 11:06 AM

REGINA, SASK. — Saskatchewan has announced the province will now fully cover the cost of the abortion drug Mifegymiso.

The coverage goes into effect on Friday, according to an announcement from the province of Saskatchewan.

Mifegymiso was the first oral product approved by Health Canada for medical termination of an early pregnancy, according to the release.

Saskatchewan and Manitoba were the final provinces that did not fully cover the cost of the drug. Manitoba announced on June 1 they would begin covering the cost of the drug.

Mifegymiso has been available in Saskatchewan by prescription since 2017, though the cost varied for patients depending on their drug coverage and eligibility through benefit programs. The pill costs more than $300.
