Redcliff Youth Centre raises $22,000 through annual Halloween fundraiser

The Redcliff Youth Centre’s annual Glass House Haunting has reached a new fundraising milestone in its sixth year, bringing in $22,000 to support free programs and resources for local youth.

Executive director Janae Ulrich says the fundraiser, which began as a project during the COVID-19 pandemic, has continued to grow over the years thanks to strong community support.

All proceeds will go toward the centre’s early intervention and prevention programs for youth ages 10 to 17, including life skills development, mental health resources, social-emotional learning and connections to community services.

“Fundraising is so vital and imperative to what we do here,” Ulrich said.

“We wouldn’t be able to facilitate half of the programs and resources and things that we do here at the Youth Centre without the community support.”

The centre currently has 478 registered youth, with about 30 per cent coming from Medicine Hat, Cypress County and surrounding areas.

Ulrich says all programs are offered free of charge, helping provide a safe and inclusive environment for young people who may not otherwise have access to extracurricular activities and other resources.

The fundraiser also allows youth to take an active role in bringing the attraction to life.

Youth help plan the haunted house, contribute ideas for its design and decorations, and take part in the event alongside volunteers.

“It’s the most rewarding experience to get to see so many kids come together, and collaborate with ideas, and show signs of leadership and teamwork,” Ulrich said.

Now operating out of a commercial space, rather than the greenhouse in Redcliff where the fundraiser originally began, the event has also been able to grow over the past two years.

Along with raising money for the youth centre, the event collected food donations in support of the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub, which partners with the centre on its dinner, healthy snack and hot lunch programs.

Ulrich said those partnerships reflect the importance of community support in keeping the centre’s programs running.

“We truly believe that we’re stronger together at the end of the day,” Ulrich said.

The fundraiser took about four weeks to set up and was supported by volunteers and sponsors, including True Gritt Fencing, Fox Canada, GVN Structures, Funtimes Entertainment and the Medicine Hat Kinsmen Club.

Ulrich says the support allows the centre to continue providing a welcoming place where local youth can connect, learn and develop new skills.
