Book-ish Tattoo Fundraiser

Medicine Hat library fundraiser puts a literary spin on tattoos

Fans of books and tattoos will have a chance to combine the two while supporting the Medicine Hat Public Library later this month.

The library is teaming up with Modern Folklore Tattoos for a Book-ish Tattoo Fundraiser, with proceeds from tattoos inspired by books going toward the library.

The event will take place in two parts, beginning with a planning night at the library on Tuesday, Nov. 10 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Tattoo artists will attend with a selection of books they’ve chosen from the library, offering inspiration for designs based on favourite stories, children’s books and nostalgic reads.

Medicine Hat Public Library Board vice-chair Megan Hilgendorf said the idea came after an owner of Modern Folklore Tattoos shared a video of a similar inspiration event held at a library in the United States.

Hilgendorf suggested turning the concept into a fundraiser, and the tattoo shop quickly agreed.

“The artists are going to come here ahead of our information night and they are going to go on their own little adventure through the library and they’re going to pull some books,” Hilgendorf said.

She said people can browse the selected books during the planning night or bring their own ideas to discuss with the artists.

The second part of the fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, from noon to 8 p.m. at Modern Folklore Tattoos, located at 646B South Railway Street S.E.

Hilgendorf said the goal is to complete as many tattoos as possible throughout the day, so designs will need to be relatively small and manageable.

“As a fundraiser, the idea is to try and see as many people as possible; that’s the goal,” Hilgendorf said.

“So it wouldn’t be very ideal if someone came in with a full sleeve idea or a back piece. That day is not the time.”

The shop’s owners plan to donate the full cost of book-inspired tattoos to the library, minus the relatively small expenses associated with supplies and maintaining a clean and sterile workspace.

Appointments can be booked during the planning night, and walk-ins will also be welcome on inking day, depending on availability.

A donation jar will be available for people who want to support the library without getting a tattoo.

Temporary tattoos may also be part of the event.
