Oct 29, 2026 | 2:35 PM

Elections Alberta released the official results of Alberta’s historic referendum on Thursday.

Voter turnout was strong across the province, with 70.4 per cent weighing in on the separation question.

Voter participation in southeast Alberta was lower than the provincial average.

In the Cypress-Medicine Hat riding, voter turnout on Question 10 was 64.7 per cent.

Similar numbers came in for Brooks-Medicine Hat at 64.3 per cent and Taber-Warner at 64.6 per cent.

The highest turnout on Question 10 was in the Airdrie-Cochrane riding at 82.9 per cent, and the lowest in Edmonton-Decore at 52.7 per cent.

Question 10 did not have the highest voter turnout in any of the three southeast Alberta ridings.

In the Cypress-Medicine Hat riding, Question Four, which asked, “Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta charging a reasonable fee or premium to individuals with a non-permanent immigration status living in Alberta for their and their family’s use of the health care and education systems?” had the highest voter turnout at 65.5 per cent.

Taber-Warner also had the most voter turnout on Question Four at 64.7 per cent.

Brooks-Medicine Hat had the highest voter turnout on Question Six, which asked, “Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King’s Bench and Appeal courts?” at 65.3 per cent.

The desire to separate was stronger in southeast Alberta than the provincial average. However, the majority still voted to remain part of Canada.

In Cypress-Medicine Hat, that number was 68.3 per cent, in Brooks-Medicine Hat at 63.2, and in Taber-Warner 53.8 per cent.
