Credit Card Fraud

Brooks RCMP warn businesses about credit card fraud following local loss

Oct 27, 2026 | 4:46 PM

Brooks RCMP are warning local businesses about credit card fraud after a business lost money and merchandise in a phone order involving multiple stolen credit cards.

Police say the local Brooks business received a call from an individual looking to purchase several hot water tanks.

During the transaction, the caller provided three different credit card numbers, explaining he was unsure of the spending limits on his cards.

The caller then asked the business to leave the tanks outside, saying his crew would not be able to pick them up until after business hours.

The transaction was completed, and the merchandise was picked up, as the business was later notified that the credit cards had been reported stolen, resulting in a financial loss and the loss of the merchandise.

Brooks RCMP are reminding business owners and employees that an approved credit card transaction does not necessarily mean a payment is legitimate or that a business is protected from a chargeback.

Police recommend being cautious of large phone orders from unfamiliar customers, particularly when multiple credit cards are used, or unusual pickup arrangements are requested.

Businesses are also encouraged to verify suspicious transactions with their payment processor or merchant services provider, following fraud prevention procedures and avoiding releasing high-value merchandise until payment and pickup arrangements have been properly verified.

“Fraudsters can be convincing and may create a sense of urgency or provide explanations that make unusual transactions seem legitimate,” Brooks RCMP said in a release.

“We encourage businesses to take the extra time to verify suspicious purchases. A few additional precautions could prevent a significant financial loss.”

Anyone who believes their business has been targeted by fraud can contact Brooks RCMP at 403-362-5535 or report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
