Oct 5, 2026 | 10:41 AM

The Medicine Hat Police Service’s Downtown Patrol Unit has received an Alberta Community Justice Award for its work improving public safety and building relationships in the city’s downtown core.

The unit received the award on Oct. 2 in the Responding to and Preventing Crime and Violence category.

It was nominated by the Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce.

Alberta’s ministries of Justice and Public Safety and Emergency Services present the awards every two years to recognize contributions to community justice, public safety and emergency management.

The Downtown Patrol Unit was formed in 2020 to address public behaviour concerns and to improve feelings of safety among downtown residents and businesses.

Its patrol area and operations have expanded over the past six years while maintaining a focus on crime prevention, community trust and supporting vulnerable people.

Accepting the award on behalf of the Medicine Hat Police Service were Sgt. Brian Bohrn, Cst. Lisa Gervais, Cst. Keegan Clarke, Cst. Mitch Young, and Cst. Tyler Stuber, along with Chief Al Murphy and Deputy Chief Raj Saini.

Bohrn has been part of the unit since its inception and has played a significant role in its development.

The nomination recognized the unit’s contribution to safety and resilience for downtown residents, businesses and visitors.
