Heavy rainfall expected to continue with Yellow Alert issued Monday morning

Heavy rain is continuing across parts of southern Saskatchewan and southern Alberta, with rainfall expected to taper off through Tuesday.

Environment Canada has a Yellow Alert in effect for rainfall across a large section of southern Alberta, including the Greater Lethbridge area, Taber, Vauxhall, Cardston and Milk River.

The agency says total rainfall amounts of 40 to 70 millimetres are expected in some areas, with the rain expected to end Tuesday.

A rainfall alert is also in effect in southern Saskatchewan, including the RMs of Happyland and Maple Creek, as well as Cypress Hills Provincial Park.

Environment Canada says rain will continue through the morning before tapering off during the day, with water pooling on roads and in low-lying areas and sudden reductions in visibility possible.

Drivers are being advised not to travel through flooded roadways, to allow extra time and to avoid low-lying areas.

The weather agency is also warning of the potential for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts in southern Alberta.
