Air quality warning issued for Cypress Hills, R.M. of Maple Creek due to wildfires

Smoke from Saskatchewan wildfires is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility in areas of the R.M. of Maple Creek and Cypress Hills Provincial Park.

Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Warning for Air Quality on Wednesday, saying smoke concentrations can vary significantly across the region, with conditions expected to improve later in the evening.

The affected area stretches along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border north to Leader, Saskatchewan, and as far east as Hubbard, Saskatchewan.

Residents in the area of effect are advised to limit time outdoors and consider reducing or rescheduling strenuous outdoor activities.

Those most vulnerable to wildfire smoke, including older adults, pregnant people, young children and people with existing health conditions, are advised to take extra precautions.

Environment Canada said people experiencing more serious symptoms, such as wheezing, chest pain or a severe cough, should seek medical attention.

Individuals who must be outdoors can reduce their exposure by wearing a well-fitting N95 or equivalent respirator.

Residents are also advised to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible, use air filtration indoors, and ensure the safety of others in their care or who live nearby that may be more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke.

The weather service requests the public to continue monitoring alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
