Residents urged to take precautions as heat warning takes effect in Medicine hat area

Jul 22, 2026 | 7:28 AM

A yellow warning for heat is in effect for the Medicine Hat area, with temperatures expected to reach anywhere from 30 to 35 C beginning today.

Daytime highs are forecast to remain in the low to mid-30s, while overnight lows are expected to stay in the mid to high teens, with hot conditions continuing into next week.

Environment Canada says prolonged periods of extreme heat can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions, including drinking plenty of water before feeling thirsty, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and spending time in cooler indoor spaces when possible.

Health officials said in the statement that people should check on those who may be more vulnerable to heat, including older adults, residents living alone, infants and young children, outdoor workers and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Early signs of heat exhaustion can include headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine and extreme fatigue.

Anyone experiencing symptoms is recommended to stop activity, move to a cooler location and drink water.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency, with signs including hot, red skin, confusion, dizziness, nausea, fainting or a change in consciousness.

Officials advise calling 9-1-1 if someone is exhibiting symptoms of heat stroke and to help cool the person while waiting for emergency responders.

Residents are also reminded to never leave children, vulnerable people or pets inside a parked vehicle, even for a short period of time.

Environment Canada issues heat warnings when very high temperatures are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat-related illnesses.
