The Southeast Alberta Chamber of Commerce says Medicine Hat’s newly adopted 2027-2030 Strategic Plan reflects many of the priorities local businesses have been advocating for and provides a strong foundation for future economic growth.

In a statement released Wednesday, the chamber said the city’s focus on economic growth, fiscal responsibility, organizational effectiveness and community connections closely aligns with issues raised through its advocacy efforts and member engagement.

“The Chamber is pleased to see many of the priorities championed by the business community reflected in the City’s strategic direction,” Chamber President Aaron Fleming said in a statement.

“Economic competitiveness, responsible financial stewardship, efficient municipal processes, workforce attraction, and investment readiness are all essential to creating the conditions for long-term prosperity in our region.”

The chamber highlighted the City’s commitment to attracting investment, expanding development opportunities and leveraging municipal assets to support sectors including energy, aerospace, defence and emerging industries.

It also welcomed the council’s plans to improve permit processing timelines, redesign development review processes and increase accountability through public performance reporting.

“Businesses want to invest and grow in communities where processes are clear, efficient, and responsive,” Fleming said.

“The commitment to modernize permitting and reduce administrative barriers sends a positive signal to current and future investors.”

The Chamber also pointed to the City’s emphasis on fiscal responsibility, affordable municipal services and transparent budgeting as important factors in maintaining a competitive business environment.

It said the strategic plan’s recognition of broader issues such as housing, workforce attraction, mental health supports and quality of life reflects challenges that directly affect employers’ ability to recruit and retain workers.

The organization also expressed support for the council focus on downtown revitalization, digital transformation, infrastructure development and water management, along with plans to introduce a government relations strategy and investor concierge service aimed at attracting new investment.

“Our Chamber looks forward to working alongside Council, Administration, regional partners, and the business community as this Strategic Plan moves from vision to implementation,” Fleming said.

“Strong communities are built through collaboration, and we see significant opportunities to work together in advancing shared goals that support economic growth, business success, and community prosperity.”

Medicine Hat city council approved the 2027-2030 Strategic Plan during its meeting on Monday.

The document will guide municipal decision-making, business planning and budgeting over the next four years.
